The following joke is inappropriate for readers of all ages
When I was at Central Michigan U, playing rugby amidst the stench of farm animals & implements, the student body threw a fit because we didn’t get MLK day off, and we were the only Division I school in the state who didn’t take holiday for MLK day. Perusing this year’s academic calendar, I note that the current CMU students will get a day a off for MLK day, but no longer get the mid-winter holiday in February. This is problematic for me, because my friend Dink is still in school, and will be accompanying me on my mid-winter snowboarding extravaganza, which happens to fall over President’s Day. WiFi Everywhere?
Oakland County, where I grew up, and where I work and go to school, is initiating a wireless network, countywide. I’ve read about similar proposals across the country, too. Driving to the Starbucks parking lot to kill sometime the other night, and also squat on their WiFi hotspot, I started thinking: The government, will in a sense, become a monopsonist purchaser of broadband services. This opens up the possbility for political cronyism, no-bid contracts, and all of the things that the left tends to bitch at the right for promulgating. But, I guess it’s ok if it makes you feel good, right? Without a say in how the money is spent, like most taxes, consumers will get royally boned. Detroit, incompetence
In spite of a seemingly ever-increasing blight, crime, a complete lack of civil services, etc., the City of Detroit imposes an income tax on anyone who works in the city. Now, I believe this is not abnormal for a city of its size, but the complete lack of competence in any civic arena is.
