Friday Quickies

Yesterday was the Iowa Caucus. I don’t even know what a Caucus is, and I’m not really interested. It has something to do with the presidency. w00t!

The Keene Free Press endorses nobody for president in 2008. H/T to Bill StClair:

Nobody has convinced us that a president is compatible with freedom;
Nobody has demonstrated that government is a good thing;
Nobody has shown us we need government;
Nobody can prevent bad people from harming you;
Nobody can prevent terrorist attacks;
Nobody truly represents all the people in America;
Nobody can restore our faith in the federal government;
Nobody can make the world safe for Democracy;
Nobody is the clear choice to lead us;

So we’re endorsing Nobody for President in 2008.

I also endorse nobody. They’re all charlatans. If you can live with yourself after voting for one of those bastards, so be it. But I refuse to participate in that charade.

At the Distributed Republic, Micah Ghertner shares his feelings about the new promotional campaign the Army is using to instill patriotism in the hearts of Americans. It is a music video set to scenes of national gaurdsmen rescuing flood victims and soldiers liberating brown people in foreign countries. I had the same thoughts as I watched the same thing in absolute disgust last week during the previews to “I Am Legend.” It was made even worse because I don’t like the band 3 Doors Down.

Unfortunately, our propaganda isn’t confined to the silver screen. At Without Hyphens, Olly notes the pervasiveness of this sort of propaganda is a testament to the general success that mass indoctrination has had on a nation of people, and it’s not limited to half-time shows, National Anthems, or Sea-World.

This is like the eleventy-billionth article the FT has posted about gold in the last three days. Pretty soon, I’m going to need to pay for a subscription to read all the articles. (Note: you can register free to view up to 30 articles per month.) Gold is a historically effective hedge against inflation.

People continue clamoring for that barbarous relic, namely, gold. Similarities and differences between the current peak and historical peak are discussed in greater detail than I care to elaborate upon, but let’s say that production is decreasing, and demand is generally increasing, all while more and more dollars are pumped into the economic system.

The latest incident of an armed citizen diffusing an armed robbery of a grocery store in Indianapolis:

A grocery store customer in Indianapolis is being credited with halting an armed robbery by pulling his own weapon and pointing it at the assailant until police arrived.

As a supporter of the right to self-defense, I think the right to bear arms is not debatable. I love these stories, but wish they didn’t have to happen.
