Gnargasm 5.0 – Jackson Hole Itinerary
Also, my side project a[GNAR]chy.com is in the preliminary stages. I haven’t moved it from the WP platform yet.
Gnargasm 5.0 is taking place two short weeks from yesterday. I can hardly contain myself, and pray to the snow gods that I don’t shatter an elbow in the interim. The lodging is not yet nailed down, but should be by tomorrow. We are sacrificing quality because we won’t be spending too much time in the room.
Available ski areas:
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort – 4,100’ vertical, 2,500 acres inbounds
Grand Targhee – 2,400’ vertical, 900 lift-served acres and 1,100 acres of powder runs
Snow King – much smaller at only 1,600’ vertical drop but right outside the hotel, also, they offer 1/2 day and evening lift tix.
Here is the itinerary:
- Thursday: Arrive at JAC, 7:15pm local time. “Take it easy tonight.” That’s what we always say.
Friday: I plan on rocking a full day at JHMR. - Saturday: If we want to try Targhee, I think this is the day. It is a 50-minute shuttle ride.
- Sunday: I plan on going back to JHMR.
- Monday: We can get up for an early session at Snow King if we’re not hungover.
If we’re up for it physically—we can get in a good 4 days of riding. Four-in-a-row is pretty tough to pull off, though, but if we do a half-day on Saturday instead of going to Targhee, and Monday is a half-day in the AM, it might be possible. I’ve been riding pretty frequently this year, and hitting the stationary bike at the gym, so I’m banking on the fact that I’m in much better shape than I was when we went to Whistler two years ago.
Also, I’m hoping for a lot of powder runs, which should be easier on the old quads than sheets of frozen ice. Teton Village area has seen 25 inches of snow in the last 3 days, and nearly 400 inches so far, this year. They average close to 460 inches, and snow is in the forecast for most of the next 10 days, with temperatures in the upper 20s—ideal for skiing or boarding.

I’m one jealous bastard
I’m not a boarder, but I am a skier, and Jackson Hole is a wonderful place, especially if you like steeps.
I’m also fond of Colorado, but I have family there, so I’m more familiar with it. In general, I prefer the west, with the wide steep runs and better powder, to the northeast which is more slalom-like.
