Underground Network

This old conscienscious objector is starting an underground network for AWOL and stop-lossed soldiers, north of the border. It sounded like an interesting piece to read, except it’s five pages long and I’m not interested in reading five pages of stop-loss orders. I get it: the government is a bastard. Your contract with Uncle Sam would make Chaucer’s Mephistopheles proud! The government, for which you were willing to die, says that once isn’t enough—back to the front! Yes, it’s tragic, but that’s what government does.

Complicating the issue, unfortunately, is that Canada may not be offering amnesty for American defectors now like they did during the Vietnam war. But there’s a shitload of wide open spaces in Canada. If you want to talk about living “off the grid,” if you can put up with the harsh winters, Canada is probably the place for you. If you’re willing to forego your creature comforts, nobody’s going to find you in the Canadian wild. As an individual, it might be tough, but a small community might have an easier go at it.
