Casino Ponderings

In Detroit, we have several casino resorts, and Michigan also has a number of tribal casinos hosted on the allegedly sovereign land of the extant native-American tribes. Sometimes you’ll hear an ad for the Casino resorts or their vacation packages, or their night clubs, but I’ve yet to hear an ad or a commercial for a Casino touting its gaming.

On the other hand, the radio and television commercial spots for the Michigan lottery are some of the worst copyI’ve ever heard or seen. And they play (particularly on the radio) with alarming frequency.  I’d guess that the Casinos are not allowed to advertise their blackjack tables or loose slots in the same way that the State of Michigan advertises Keno or the Daily 3.It seems silly that many states ban casino gambling, bookmaking, and the like—essentially granting monopoly privileges to those States which permit those sorts of businesses. One of the surest ways to depress employment and economic productivity is to arbitrarily ban certain types of businesses, which restrict the quantity and quality of available jobs in a given area.
