Fighting a defensive war is a perfectly moral action (since the alternative is invasion and destruction). This is not to drop the context that a nation can only fight a defensive war against another nation that is engaged in an offensive war against it (i.e., the initiation of force). But we absolutely should praise the men and women who fought to defend our rights against foreign invaders. Now this begs the question, "Has the US ever fought a defensive war?" I am admittedly not knowledgeable enough about US history to address that one. I think it is important to make a distinction between defensive wars and offensive wars. This book demonstrates that WWII was more a war of protecting British imperialism than staving off world wide Fascism and the futility of it all. Well worth a read.
