Simplify 2.0

Trying out another theme, fits this site better than the neon. I may go back to the neon, I’m confident that I can make the small changes to the stylesheet to completely overhaul the color scheme.

I do not care for this theme’s bells and whistles, and it is a pain in the ass to modify, but aesthetically I like it, so for the time being (maybe a day, maybe a week) it is here to stay.

In the process of changing WordPress themes here. I had tweaked the old one so many ways that I couldn’t keep it straight anymore. I experimented with a few nice looking themes today, but couldn’t get them to work the way I wanted them too. I suspect some of the problems were browser cache issues, but in any event, I do not want or need a theme which controls the Main Index template separately from the Single Post template separately from the Page Template separately from the Archives template.

I’ve installed the Black Neon 1.0.2 theme, by blogsimplified.com a slightly modified version of which I use on aGNARchy.com. I like it because it’s super simple to play around with, and for me; although I’m well-versed in basic HTML, I know next-to-nothing about CSS and PHP, so my “modifications” usually mutate into something less-than-desirable.

I will probably stick with Neon Black for the time being, perhaps making some small adjustments here and there.

Comments Are Fixed (Mostly)

Yesterday I mentioned that the comments on this site were broken. For the most part, everything is back to normal using the standard WordPress comments, however all comments posted between October 14 and October 24 appear to have been permanently lost. Most unfortunately, many of these comments were in response to Usury: Three Questions, which was a conversation I very much wanted to continue.

After several unsuccessful attempts to do a “clean import” of the IntenseDebate comments, I decided to disable the plug-in, hoping that the problem might resolve itself. It didn’t.

Fortunately, this problem only impacted twelve comments in all. Curiously, these comments were not present in the database backup file that I created on Thursday, October 22—although I recall seeing and responding to these comments (as evidenced by the archive of my individual user comments.

I have not yet decided whether I will re-activate the IntenseDebate plug-in. For the most part I have been satisfied with its performance, although I’ve noticed that sporadically after I “approve” a comment held for moderation, that same comment never appears on the site.

I am open to suggestions, if there are other plug-ins etc. that might enhance the comments here.

Comments Broken

I think I broke my comments.

I had noticed that my WordPress dashboard hadn’t been displaying recent comments for about a week; it also wasn’t showing recent incoming links either, and so I assumed that an upgrade to the latest version of WordPress might fix it.

So I upgraded yesterday, and now the same 8 comments (from a post about a month ago) are showing up on every post. I have tried to reset IntenseDebate (the comment plug-in that I use), and that didn’t seem to work, so I tried to do a clean import of the comments. The import “ran” all night long and progress was still showing at zero percent.

I’m hoping that restoring the comments from the site backup that I did on Thursday will resolve the problem. In the meantime, bear with me…

Metablogging: Thanks for the Traffic!

So far, September-09 is about 50% more than my previous high-water mark for 2009, and there’s still a week left.

Thanks to redditor MindVirus, my post on the Jericho, AR fire chief who was shot in the back while contesting a traffic ticket is raging at reddit.com (here is the reddit page for my post).

Thanks also to Lori Smith who submitted that post, and yesterday’s post about Obama’s deference to Bush policy regarding Gitmo detainees, to freedomsphoenix.com (here is the page for my post).

Frequent readers of this blog will know that it is not monetized, and I intend to keep it that way as long as I continue to get free server space and no bandwidth restrictions. That said, I appreciate massive amounts of traffic as much as the next guy (or gal) because I do this to spread ideas, and traffic means readers, and readers means ideas are getting out there.
